Special Student Opportunities

International Law Internships
One of the most significant aspects of the Cox Center is that it helps launch students in a career in international law by providing grants to support summer and post-graduate internships abroad or in the United States with an international organization, a governmental agency, or nonprofit. Since 2001, through the support of The Klatsky Program in Human Rights, the Center annually awards two $4,000 summer fellowships that enable students to work with Human Rights Watch in Washington, D.C. and New York City. In addition, the Center annually provides grants of up to $3,000 to between fifteen and twenty students to defray travel and living expenses for their international law related summer and post-graduate internships.

International Tribunal Externships
Case is one of the few law schools that allow students to obtain a full semester’s credit for interning at
one of five international criminal tribunals during the second or third year of law school. To date, more
Case School of Law students have interned at these tribunals than students from any other law school.

“The summer after my first year, the Cox Center funded my internship with the Center for International Environmental Law in Washington, D.C.; after my second year, it funded my internship at the Foundation for Human Rights Initiative in Kampala, Uganda; and after graduating from Case, the center funded my internship with the Appeals Chamber of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia and Rwanda. These internships provided me an invaluable learning and networking experience, and led to my dream job as Legal Advisor to the Judges of the Rwanda ribunal in Arusha, Tanzania.”

Study Abroad
In partnership with Washington University School of Law in St. Louis, Case hosts the Summer Institute for Global Justice at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. In this six-week, ABA-approved summer study abroad program, students earn six credits by taking three of six courses taught by prominent international law experts from the U.S. and Europe. The program also features guest lectures by international officials and visits to the nearby international institutions based in The Hague and Brussels. More information and a gallery of student photos are available online.

Semester Abroad
During the school year, Case students may study at a foreign university for a semester. Our students have studied all over the world, from Russia to Mexico, from Canada to China, from Australia to Spain and Japan. The School of Law has formal student and faculty exchange programs with our Canadian sister school, the University of Western Ontario, as well as the University of Ottawa (common law and civil law). Additionally, the Cox Center helps students identify foreign schools, develop a curriculum and writing project, and defray expenses with awards up to $3,000.

Case Abroad at Home
Bringing international and comparative law experts from other countries to teach week-long one-credit mini courses, the program augments our international law curriculum. Since August 2005, mini-courses have been offered in the week before fall semester. Foreign faculty interested in teaching in this program should contact Prof. Jacqueline Lipton, associate director, Cox Center (jdl14@case.edu).
